Annual Utah Quilt Show

If you live near the Springville Museum of Art you won't want to miss the 39th Annual Utah Quilt Show. It runs through August 29th. The Corn Wagon Quilt Co. is one of the major sponsors of this show. And while you are in the neighborhood stop in a say hello, we are just up the street. Our very own Ramona Sorensen pieced and quilted the beautiful quilt pictured below. We donate the Opportunity Quilt each year to help raise funds to go towards the awards at the show. The Utah County Quilt Guild held their annual quilt fair there also. Myself, Emily, Paris and Terry made an afternoon visiting the vendors and viewing all the quilts.
As usual there are some gorgeous quilts displayed. Such a wide variety of colors, patterns and techniques. Here are a few shots of some of the award winning quilts. Love the red, cream and blue sunbursts on this quilt.

This one is made from antique flour sacks. Pretty cute and clever. Should I be on the hunt?
Oh my, this one is made from men's silk ties. Over 200 of them belonging to a Mormon missionary, collected from his mission. It was amazing.
This quilt is an Awards of Excellence for the color/white & brights. It's called My Whimsical Quilt Garden. The quilter is LuAnn Carlson.

This is one of the Judges Choice Awards, this quilt belongs to Barbara Walsh. It's called Bali Wedding Star. Oh, I need to mention that we love seeing Barbara in the Corn Wagon, she's one of our favorites. Congrats, Barbara.

I love this photo. I walked around the corner and found mother and daughter discussing, I'm pretty sure the quilt that's in front of them. Without seeing faces I knew who they were. I had to have this special moment frozen in time. These two ladies are from Spanish Fork and are beautiful quilters. And not to mention they are relatives and long time family friends. They both make frequent stops at the Corn Wagon.
And the faces of these fine ladies. Karen Nelson Shepherd and her mom, Lenore Nelson. Lenore, with the help of her quilting bee friends hand quilted one of Kaitlyn's quilts before her wedding. That quilt will always have a special place in our hearts.
Myself, Terry, Emily and Paris had to stop and discuss the next part of the day. Which by the way would be lunch!
So ladies if you live near (or far) put this outing on your list of things to do before summer ends. It's well worth the drive. And let me suggest the Trolley for lunch.

Just a Get Away!

And it rained and rained and rained. This really makes for a lazy weekend in the Bear Lake area of this beautiful state we live in. Our first stop out of town was the Dairy Keen in Heber for something to eat. They are well known for their burgers and shakes. We opted out of the shake because we just knew we would get our share once we were at Bear Lake. They are known for their scrumptious raspberry shakes.

"She'll be coming around the mountain when she comes"! Kids as well as adults like this feature at this popular summer destination spot. We try to go there at least once a summer. They aren't open in the winter months so they were having Christmas in July and were featuring shakes with flavors such as Eggnog, Peppermint, etc. What a "COOL" idea.

We got set up just in time before another big one hit. The water just poured and poured.

Saturday afternoon the activities around the campground resumed. Here they are going for a tractor ride. The KOA had lots of fun stuff to do as families. We are going to try and get this on the calendar for everyone next year. The kids would have a ball there.

Sunday afternoon Jacob and Angie drove up to visit us. We barbecued hamburgers and had the first corn on the cob of the season.

We even shared lunch with the seagulls. They really love what everyone drops on the ground. Don't choke little bird! And he wasn't about to share it with anyone.

Later that afternoon we drove into town and picked us up one of those delicious shakes.

Worth every penny and pound!

Monday on our way home we stopped at the overlook of the Bear Lake valley. It was a pretty shot. After all the rain we had over the weekend it sure did make things pretty and green.

It's fun just to get away and enjoy the trailer life. And the company is always good too. Not one stitch was made this weekend. Can you believe it? I told you it was a lazy weekend.

A Wearable Treasure!

As I was sifting through mounds of stuff in the sewing room I came upon this little sack, a souvenir from my trip to the Netherlands, but what was inside? I couldn't remember. The surprise I got was charms and beads. By now all of you should know I love trinkets of jewelry, right? And when I saw these little cuties at one of the quilt shops, I knew I needed them. I haven't done anything with those yet, but I did have the beads made into a bracelet and earrings.My dear friend Wendy here in Spanish Fork put these together for me. Didn't she do a great job? I love how they turned out. I can't wait to wear them. The delft blue beads are so pretty and intricate. And I understand this is a hot fashion color right now. Beads of My Heart is Wendy's company name, and that's just what I'll do when I wear it. I will think back on all the friends and memories I made while I was there that are so near and dear to my heart. Thank you Wendy, check out her stuff on her website. I have linked it up above.

Lollipop, lollipop, oh lolli, lollipop!

I read some where this week that today is National Lollipop Day! Oh my goodness we have a national day for everything it seems like, doesn't it? Notice I always pick up on all the "SWEET" ones they have. Those are really the ones that catch my attention!
And in honor of this fun day See's Chocolates are giving away their famous chocolate lollies. So if you live close by one of these fabulous candy stores you just might want to stop in and get yourself a little treat, and it's free! These bring back childhood memories for me. Santa would always leave one or two of these in our stockings at Christmas time. The caramel and chocolate are my favorite.
And speaking of lollipops. Do you remember this line of fabric that Anna Maria designed for Free Spirit about 5 years ago called Chocolate Lollipops?
Well, looky what I found in "my" fabric shop as I was re-arranging the piles. I think it was meant to be that I play in my fabric this week! And look it even has rows put together. Hum, another UFP!

Now go and get you some lolly's, I am for a treat at the rodeo tonight!

I have a problem,

a fabric problem that is. I think I need Quilt Therapy! I have been sorting through piles and piles of fabric this last week. It's getting better but it's still not done.

I re-organized my patterns and charm packs.

My jelly rolls and layer cakes are all in one place now.

Something for my Sis. . .

who needs the comfort of a quilt! Going through a knee replacement won't be very pleasant but I hope the comfort of a bright and happy quilt on her lap will make her smile. It would me. Last week I made the Family Room Quilt from the book Simple Home by Sweetwater.
I used a layer cake from the Moda line Bliss from Bonnie and Camille that I have had since it first came out. I never could find the right project for it, but an occasion like this is well deserving of such cute fabrics. It's such a cheerful, happy quilt I think. I hope it brings some comfort and smiles to Collette the next couple of weeks. Here's wishing a speedy recovery to my sweet sister.
Marked with one of my labels so she will always know my thoughts and prayers are always with her. Love ya, Sis.

Red, White & Blue! Happy Birthday to You

For my class demonstration on the Jelly Roll 1600 in Panguitch I chose to do red, white and blue. I don't know what it is about these colors but they just make me feel good and proud to be an American. The jelly roll I used was the Red work Renascence from Chloe's Closet for Moda. For the accent fabric I used some chambray from my stash and the border and binding fabrics were from Michael Miller. I think they are both Swirly Girl's designs. This looks like a big pile of scraps doesn't it? But really it's the jelly roll strips after they are all sewn together.
The first section done and pressed. Now moving onto the next section and the next and the next!
By chance, these 2 1/2"accent squares ended up in a perfect four patch square. Couldn't of planned it better.
I finished it in my motel room late one night. If you have ever done one of these quilts you know that you can't plan this quilt out. It is really fun to do and the outcome on this one reminded me of an American flag. I couldn't wait to get it quilted and start using it. My first intentions for this quilt was to use it as a picnic blanket or stadium blanket but it's just to cute to leave in the car trunk! It needs to be displayed in the house, but the girl's at the shop thought it ought to be there.
So, yes it's at the shop this 4th of July. I wanted it quilted in an all over paisley design to match the outer border. I love everything about this quilt. Maybe I can get it back in time to use during our state holiday, the 24th of July.
There are all sorts of free tutorials on You Tube for this quilt. It will be appearing on our class list this fall, watch for it and start watching for that perfect jelly roll.

Another Bag Test

I love tests! Not really, but if it has anything to do with something sewing I can enjoy them. Isn't this the cutest ever. I was lucky enough to test it for Pie Plate Patters(Bonnie & Brenda). They are branching out from quilt designs with some fun new stuff. This is called Misty's Messenger bag. It's perfect for a scripture tote for Young Women, or you could use it for a lunch tote. It also would make a great travel size bag when your regular bag is just to big. I pulled fabrics from the stash and gave it a try. It turned out perfect.The pattern did call for the flower accent on the front but the strip and ric rac is something I added for color because the polka dot seemed to plain.
For the edges you bind them just as you would a quilt. It's cuter on the outside rather than be hidden on the inside.
There are two side pockets sewn into the side pieces. Great for a phone and pens. Something new I hadn't worked with is the Soft & Stable interfacing. I'm just going to tell you I love this stuff already. It holds the shape so well, and it makes the straps really comfortable on you shoulder. I haven't seen this in our area yet but I am going to try and find it for the shop. It is manufactured in St. George at Superior Threads. I was able to get some at Quilted Works this weekend. Time to use it in another project. This would also would make great filler for place mats and hot pads.
