New Fabric, New Quilt!

Ooh, isn't this cute? I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it when it came into the shop. It's the Seaside collection from Riley Blake. The blues, oranges and yellows work really well in the collection. And the stripe I am loving, although I didn't use it in my quilt.Kits are made and put away for class. Which by the way is in October.

Have you ever used one of these? The Easy Dresden ruler is fun to use and it makes the perfect dresden plate. You can make several different sizes with just this one ruler.

And this is the finished quilt. A free tutorial on the Riley Blake Cutting Corners page. I added a inside border to kinda of separate the background and outside border piece.

This quilt measures 41" x 52" a perfect size for a baby.

The seaside all over scene made the best backing. This is the quilting outline of the center and the dresden plate.

And of course a binding shot, doesn't the blue polka dot finish it off nicely. I will save a kit for you if your interested. Watch for our open house the 2nd weekend in September when all the new class quilts will be hung.

Lucky Me! I Know This One Too

I was just browsing the What's New category on the Fat Quarter Shop website and ran onto this. The Pioneer Star Quilt Kit designed, pieced and quilted by our very own Romana Sorensen at the Corn Wagon. This is hanging downstairs in her quilting room at the shop. Trust me, from one seeing it in person it's beautiful! Check out FQS website for all the details and price of this quilt kit.It is featured in Quilt Magazine, hitting store shelves now. It is the Oct./Nov. issue. Ramona was lucky enough to design this for RJR Fabrics. And if you already have your copy, stop by and have her autograph it for you.

Let's Do Bags!

After a long hiatus away from the Bag Ladies, she's ready to come back. This is one of the bags we will be making in Bag Ladies class. It's roomy enough for all your on the go sewing projects. Or you could definitely use it to meet you personal needs. This pattern is a Whistle Pig Creek, called A Charming Tote and I used a charm pack from the cute new line from Sweet water called "Mama said Sew". The perfect fabrics for any sewing project. As we don't have the actual yardage of this fabric yet and I wanted to get the shop sample done, I chose to use Wordplay by Michele D' Amore, a designer for Benartex. Notice all the great sewing related words printed on it.

With the 7 leftover charm squares I decided to make a flower embellishment for the outside. This is totally optional, or you could make your inside pockets from them. I used a Moda basic dot fat quarter for the pockets.
This is October's bag and I hope you come make one with us because, "Mama said Sew"! Watch in the following days for other class samples, There's still lots to share. Won't be until Saturday though, I'm just heading out of town with Terry to attend the Pie Plate Patterns High Mountain Retreat. Yeah, I'm working on something besides shop samples. They have all been turned it, hip hip hooray!

Another class quilt!

Now this is what you call easy peasy! And it would be another great beginners class. The inspiration for this quilt is from a pattern by my good friends Bonnie and Brenda. I am calling it Layer Cake Magic. It's all cut from one layer cake and a little yardage for the borders. When you have fabrics as fun as this, it makes for the perfect quilt. A real fresh and modern quilt. Oh by the way the layer cake I used is called "Oh Deer" from Momo. And the green solid I used for the borders is a Michael Miller cotton couture, the color grass.

Even the 1" inside border is cut from leftover blocks. No extra fabric needed.

For my backing I used up some of Momo's older lines that matched so well. I love pieced backings and it's a great way to use some of those larger pieces piling up in the stash piles.
And the binding, another favorite of mine. I just can't wait for the quilt to get off the quilting frames so I can get started. I always have something on hand to bind, in fact I have 2 baby quilts waiting for me just in case I don't have one that is on a dead line. Love, love, love binding!
Ramona quilted an all over flower and leaf combination on this one. She used a variegated thread with greens, yellows and reds.

My Fall Quarter Class Samples

So I know it's not fall yet but today is the deadline for our fall class samples to be turned in. I have been piecing, sewing and binding like a mad girl. Over the next few days I will be showing what I have lined up for classes at the Corn Wagon. Classes begin in September. Hope something catches your eye and that you want to come join us. I have lots of show and tell, in all 4 quilts and 4 bags. The first quilt is a baby quilt, but this actually could be made bigger. The more strips sewn together, the bigger the block. It's called the Simple Amazing Jelly Roll quilt. And just as the name indicates, the technique is "simply amazing". This whole quilt is made from one Riley Blake jelly roll which are only 24 2 1/2" strips, a little yardage for the borders and binding. You will have no waste in this project.For the back, I chose the golden rod solid minky. It just shows the quilting off so nice. Not only that but babies love the softness of it.
I had Ramona quilt one of my favorite designs on it. She calls it Wonky Flower.
The binding is done with the same fabric as the outside border. This quilt really does work up fast. It would be great for beginners. But yet, those more advanced sewers would love it too. There are kits available for this one. Watch for calendar dates coming out the next couple of weeks. I will post them all here when they are finalized.

Neil Diamond Concert!

Just a few people in the state of Utah had the same idea we did! We got tickets for the Neil Diamond concert on July 28th, clear back in December. It was at the Rio Tinto Soccer Stadium, an outdoor venue. This is something that's been on our bucket list of things to do. And since he was going to be here we thought what a great opportunity to see him. Neil's movie the Jazz Singer came out the year we were married, which seems like it was just yesterday. We had the cassette version of the sound track. We knew those songs inside and out, til we wore it out. We were moving and a grooving to the songs he sang.Look we can do this too, just like the kids do today. The only thing is my arms aren't quite long enough.

Not the best seats in the house, but still worth it.

We really did have an enjoyable evening. The weather was gorgeous for an outdoor show. Now we can cross this one off the old geezers bucket list.

Quilt Show Time Again!

It seems like this quilt show gets bigger and bigger every year. For one day only the Fiesta Day's Quilt Show is held on the 24th of July. This is an outdoor event as is held at the Hughes home right on main street.

This year Corn Wagon Quilts and employee's were the featured quilter's. Can we hear a big shout out for the Corn Wagon girl's!

Every employee was required to submit some quilts. This year our very own Suzanne took second place with her Grandmother's Kitchen Applique Quilt. This is one we just finished using at the shop for our annual shop hop.
This is our newest employee Chris and one of her many entries. She is one very talented girl. We are lucky to have her and it didn't take us long to break her in. She's just as crazy as the rest of us. She just happened to be at the show the same time I was.

This cute, cute quilt belongs to my daughter, Kira. It is made out of Urban Cowgirl and the pattern is Swoon from Thimble Blossoms. Didn't she do a great job on it?
Lots of pretty quilts to look at this year. Sorry I didn't get more picture's, especially the 1st place winner. It was just to darn hot to stand and take pictures. But notice I did get the most important ones right!

2012 Fiesta Days

Before it gets way to late I need to post some events from back in July. Here in the state of Utah we celebrate the 24th of July, remembering our pioneers who entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Spanish Fork's celebration is called Fiesta Days. We have lots of things going on during the 4 days of fun. We especially like the rodeo and this year we were all part of history. For 70 years the city has been sponsoring this event. This year we did it in a brand new arena. Just after the rodeo last year they tore down the well used arena and just in time for this years rodeo the arena was ready. What a beautiful addition to the city.

The first night we took Emily, Terry, Mary Ann and their husbands. What a fun night we had. Do we look like rodeo queens or more like quilting queens?

The second night of the rodeo was Stuarts class reunion. But back again on the third night with some of the family and their friends. Isn't this a beautiful shot of the flag, partly cloudy but no rain. Yeah!

And what is this? The clown being himself, funny!

And on the 24th we all gather together for the grand parade, lunch at the house and more rodeo action that night.
We have a great spot on the parade route, right in front of the station. Grandpa spoils the kids through the whole parade with treats and drinks. Not to shabby!

That night's rodeo started off with this pair of rainbows just across from our seats.

Afterwards we pick a spot on the rodeo grounds and watch the fireworks. Another one down and many more to go. This is a highlight of the summer, being all together doing the things we love most.
